What
is this contest?
USA’s
Largest and Most Prestigious Feedlot Feeder
Contest.
This
contest is for the real world "what goes on
the beef consumers plates" genetics, not
for show steers or club calves. Entirely
consisting of steers and heifers who's soul
intension is to be raised by their mother, then
shipped to the feedlot in their natural everyday
cloths to be fed out for harvest.
Beef
Empire Days, was formed in 1968.
The contest is held each year beginning
at the end of May and lasting for one week. The
Garden City area feeds about 1 million cattle
each year. Approximately
300 head born and raised from through out the
United States are evaluated on the hoof and on
the rail for this contest.
How
did Hildreth Livestock do?
Overall
Grand Champion Steer.
There were only 3 other steers who placed
both in the “on the hoof” live division and
carcass division.
We are the only Montanans to win this
contest.

Compare
the differences above. The Hildreth Steer
back fat at harvest was a .36 versus contest
average back fat at harvest at .52 (close normal
target for harvesting). Having a higher REA,
less fat, more muscle, higher carcass weight,
higher quality and yield grade equals a higher
dressing percentage with more and better product
(beef) going to the consumer with less waste
going on the cement floor.
